Controlled Atmosphere Gloveboxes

A controlled atmosphere glovebox, sometimes also called a "dry box," is an enclosure that provides a leak-tight environment. These gloveboxes allow you to control several environmental conditions in your experiments, including

  • Atmosphere
  • Humidity
  • Temperature
  • Static safety
  • Particulates
 Applications of Controlled Atmosphere Gloveboxes

Controlled atmosphere gloveboxes are widely used for air-sensitive inorganic, organic, organometallic, and biochemical materials. Procedures that may be conducted inside these gloveboxes include lithium battery development, catalyst and nanotechnology research. With these gloveboxes, you can work with such contamination-sensitive materials under controlled conditions, including

  • Low levels of oxygen and moisture
  • Positive or negative pressure
  • Inert gas such as nitrogen, helium, or argon

Controlled atmosphere gloveboxes typically operate under a positive pressure of inert process gas.


 Design Features

Innovative Technology's System One Glovebox consists of the following major elements that work together to create the leak-proof environment you need:

  • Large (15" dia) antechamber
  • Main chamber
  • Electronic controls
  • Blower
  • Gloves

Antechamber

The antechamber is where you load and unload materials into your glovebox.

Main chamber

The main chamber is a sealed chamber where you use gloves to manipulate materials. It is delivered ready for use with nitrogen, helium, or argon.

Gas Purification

The main chamber and transfer chamber connect via dedicated tubing to a compressed gas and vacuum pump. With this tubing, the chambers can be evacuated and filled with pure nitrogen, helium, or argon. The System One Glovebox uses a gas purification system that is easily accessible and has automatic valves, which provides an inert atmosphere with H²O <1ppm O²

Electronic controls

The System One Glovebox is designed to be easy to use, with all key information available on one screen. A touch screen that can be controlled by a PLC is also available.

The System One Glovebox also includes a dual microprocessor control specifically designed for gloveboxes. With electronic controls, you can

  • Control the pressure in the main chamber
  • Choose the number of evacuation and fill cycles needed
  • Select the level of vacuum for each cycle
  • Start and cancel cycles
  • Select the source of fill gas, whether nitrogen, helium, or argon
  • Regenerate the gas purifier

Blower

The blower controls circulation inside the main chamber. The System One Glovebox includes a 0-60 cfm stainless steel blower.

Gloves

Users access their materials through gloves that allow them to reach into the main chamber. The System One Glovebox can be equipped with a variety of gloves, depending on

  • The working conditions (positive or negative pressure)
  • The type of chemicals being used
  • The required mechanical performance

Standard gloves come in 15 mil or 30 mil thicknesses, based on dexterity needed and level of hazard. Custom thicknesses are also available for specific applications.

Available glove material includes Butyl, Hypalon, Neoprene, Hypalon-Lead Loaded Neoprene-Hypalon, Polyurethane, Polyurethane-Hypalon, Hypalon-Viton, and Natural Rubber. The glove material you choose should depend on the chemical and mechanical properties specific to each material.
