Isolators for Potent Compounds Applications

In recent years, the pharmaceutical industry has been discovering and developing ever more potent drugs and compounds. A potent compound is defined as one in which

  • Clinical doses less than 10 milligrams cause pharmacological or toxic effects in patients
  • Low doses (less than 1 mg/kg/day) in laboratory animals can cause mutations, tumors, or cancer
  • Low doses (less than 1 mg/kg/day) in laboratory animals cause reproductive or developmental problems

Potent compounds can cause injury to pharmaceutical industry employees through ingestion, inhalation, skin contact, and eye contact. Chronic exposure is a particular problem, especially as some potent compounds are habit-forming.

The increased number of potent compounds has presented a challenge to the pharmaceutical industry. In earlier years, pharmaceutical industry employees could work safely simply by donning personal protective equipment (PPE) and respirators. This approach is no longer enough, particularly with potent compounds that reach the sub-microgram region. Instead, companies must seek to design and implement a "contain-at-source" strategy in order to control air and surface contamination and to protect employees.

With such a contain-at-source strategy, also simply called containment, potent compounds are worked with only in a closed system such as the IT Isolator. Employees are safer because the IT Isolator offers contained transport and transfer procedures and an isolated work process. Workers use a sealed, sterile, aseptic pass-through chamber to place potent compounds into the isolator. Then, the potent compound is placed in a sealed and closed work area that contains all airborne contaminants and sweeps them safely out through an air exhaust system. Workers can view the compounds through plastic viewing screens, and access the compounds only through ports equipped with gloves. In addition, workers can wear double gloves so that if the outer glove is ripped or begins to leak, the inner glove still provides protection. Thus, the IT Isolator controls both air and surface contamination, and employee exposure to the potent compounds is minimal.
